Sloped-Ceiling Wallpaper Tips (Attics & Eaves)
Make awkward angles feel calm, creative and cohesive. This guide shows how to plan, hang and style wallpaper on sloped ceilings and eaves—perfect for kids’ rooms and attic nooks.
Why pattern loves a slope
- Repeating motifs guide the eye along the angle and add rhythm.
- Mid-scale prints (like Starry Night) create flow without clutter.
- Soft, warm tones keep low ceilings feeling snug—not small.
Plan & measure
- Measure wall width and the sloped run. Add 5–10% for trimming and pattern match.
- Decide your start line: usually a true vertical plumb line on the tallest wall.
- If the slope meets a vertical wall, align your first drop to the plumb line on that wall for a clean visual anchor.
Tools you’ll need
- Non-woven paste (paste-the-wall), roller & tray
- Laser level/plumb line, tape measure, pencil
- Smoothing brush/squeegee, sharp knife + spare blades, straight edge
- Clean cloth/sponge for paste residue
Hanging on a slope (step-by-step)
- Prep: smooth, dry, primed surface; remove dust. Paint patches to a uniform light colour.
- Paste the wall one panel width at a time. Avoid thick ridges.
- First drop: align the dry panel to your plumb line; smooth centre → outwards.
- Approaching the slope: let the panel run past the angle; trim along the slope with a sharp blade and straight edge.
- Seams: butt gently (no overlap). Match the 50 cm repeat where applicable.
- Edges: trim at skirting and ceiling; wipe paste immediately.
Inside/outside corners & tricky spots
- Inside corner: don’t force a full-width drop around the angle. Wrap 1–2 cm around the corner, then start a new straight panel on the next wall.
- Outside corner: wrap 1–2 cm; for best results, treat as two walls with a neat trim line.
- Sockets/windows: hang over, then X-cut and trim to edges (power off).
Styling ideas for sloped rooms
- Keep the headboard low so the pattern does the framing.
- Use a canopy or soft drape to soften hard angles.
- Repeat 3–4 colours (e.g., pink, brown, cream + one accent) across textiles and art.
Common mistakes (and fixes)
- Starting without a plumb line → Result: drifting seams. Fix: re-set the first drop straight.
- Over-pasting → Result: ridges/bleed. Fix: roll even, thin coats.
- Forcing panels around corners → Result: tension and gaps. Fix: wrap 1–2 cm, start a fresh panel.
